Living The Apostle's Creed - Suffering, Death and Burial
I believe in Jesus... suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead

This last weekend, I had the privilege of preaching on perhaps the most sobering of the lines in The Apostle’s Creed; Jesus “suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead.”
As in my previous preaching in this series, I was particularly interested in thinking about how we are invited to live the Creed. This provided an opportunity to reach into some of my study on the topic of “collective memory” and how we, as the church, continue to retell, reimagine and reconstruct the narratives of the Scriptures with respect to the present to know how we can live as Jesus disciples in 2025.
Below is the video of the full sermon where I walk through three simple, though beautifully complex, questions:
Why is Jesus’ death significant?
What did Jesus’ death do?
How do we now live?
